Stepping in the Right Direction

With so many self-help books and personal development gurus flooding our news feeds, it is easy to feel overwhelmed with what we should or shouldn’t be doing, who we should or shouldn’t let into our lives, or what our actions do or don’t mean. Its not as if we can snap our fingers and have everything we think we want or even know what we want to begin with. Living is a process. A beautiful, challenging process but a process nonetheless. A clear answer on the right choices to make is not always available to us. In those moments we may take a step back, weigh the pros and cons but still realize we aren’t 100% sure about what we’re doing.

.

One of my favorite authors, Wallace D. Wattles (The Science of Getting Rich), once said “…you’re next position may not be the position you want, but it should be a step in that direction…” This helps me remember how important it is to have a mindset based on perpetual improvement as opposed to, “this is what I want and I’m not settling for anything less.” While that’s great in theory, there are still levels that must be conquered before we can move on to the next. A question I commonly ask myself when faced with a new opportunity, “Does this move make me better than I am today? Does it point me in the direction of my goals?” If I can answer yes, then I know I’m stepping in the right direction.

.

It may not be what you want but does it bring you closer to it?
